Veneers
If you have your natural teeth but for various reasons do not feel comfortable showing them, constantly hiding your smile, you might be a good candidate for veneers. A stunning improvement can be quickly achieved with the help of veneers. They are an ideal way to change the shape and unwanted color. Improving the color and shape of the teeth is the most beneficial impact that veneers have. These are thin porcelain layers prepared in the laboratory according to the mouth’s measurements and technically fitted perfectly. Veneers look like natural teeth, are durable, and very aesthetic. Veneers enable an ideal smile without radical procedures.
When are veneers used?
Veneers are used to improve a series of cases such as:
- Discolored teeth. There are several types of pigmentation or demineralization that create the appearance of stained teeth.
- Teeth with cavities or surface damage when a longer-term solution is required than what adhesive fillings (composite) can offer.
- Large fillings in the front teeth as a result of which the tooth changes color over the years.
- Short, small front teeth: some people may have a genetic predisposition for this tooth shape, but it can also come from a tooth fracture or wear of the occlusal surface due to grinding.
- Teeth with gaps between them.
- Small aesthetic orthodontic adjustments.
How are they prepared?
Three appointments are required to complete veneers:
In the first appointment, the tooth surface is prepared, and the impression is taken. Meanwhile, temporary work is applied to protect the exposed structure.
In the second appointment, the veneers are tested, and their fit is checked.
The final veneer is bonded in a special procedure in the third appointment.
This is followed by two control sessions:
The first session comes after a week, where the doctor checks the condition of the gums around the veneers and ensures the bite is adequate and free from obstructions.
The second control session comes after a year.
A preliminary session is needed when the cases are complicated (or at the special request of the patient), creating a wax model with the final appearance of the veneers.
How long do they last?
Veneers are expected to last 10-20 years. Porcelain, being made of organic material, is subject to “aging.” For this reason, veneers lose their freshness and charm after several years and need to be replaced. These are irreversible procedures when the tooth surface is prepared. The loss, damage, or breakage of a veneer requires its replacement. For this, your doctor will provide you with a protective night guard and guide you on how to use it.
